Itinerary

Day 1: Mexico City - Teotihuacan - Grutas de Tolantongo

In the morning, meet your guide in Mexico City and head to UNESCO-listed Teotihuacan, the capital of the first Mesoamerican empire. Once there, explore the archaeological zone with your tour guide walking the Road of the Dead and seeing the impressive Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon and other sights of this ancient city.

After this, head to Grutas de Tolantongo, located in Hidalgo, a state famous for its beautiful natural attractions. On the way, enjoy various landscapes and opt to try barbacoa, the traditional dish from the region.

In the afternoon, once in Tolantongo, relax in the hot waters (35º-38º C) in the pools built into a cliff of a picturesque 500-meter-high canyon. Another attraction is two grottos, out of which flows a volcanically-heated river that follows the canyon floor. The large grotto chamber is about half the size of a tennis court with a ceiling of up to 10 m. Above the grotto is a “tunnel”, a small cavern 15 m deep in which warm water showers those who venture inside.

Spend the rest of the day getting relaxed in the pools or the river, or enjoying optional activities such as ziplining or hiking till dusk.

Day 2: Grutas de Tolantongo - Huasca de Ocampo - Mexico City

On the second day, after checkout, go to Huasca de Ocampo, a charming town surrounded by green forests and mountains.

Firstly, see the unique Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla, part of UNESCO’s Comarca Minera Geopark. Once there, discover amazing basalt columns that were created millions of years ago as a result of a volcanic explosion.

Afterward, learn about the history of Huasca de Ocampo visiting one of its very well-preserved haciendas from the late 18th century. Once there, get acquainted with the colonial past of this town and explore Hacienda de Santa María Regla, an astonishing old building that witnessed the prosperity and wealth of Huasca as a mining town during the Spanish colonization.

Finally, before getting back to Mexico City, enjoy an orientation walk in the historic center of Huasca de Ocampo, the first “Magical Town” in Mexico. Stroll its cobblestone streets, see colorful houses and admire its beautifully ornamented 16th-century church. Also, try local “pastes”, traditional iconic pastries from Hidalgo State.

Once ready, get back to our vehicle and relax on the way back to Mexico City.
